Course Description

Avalanche Safety 1 provides the basic knowledge of avalanches and avalanche hazards. Participants will learn different methods to move safely near avalanche terrain. They will also learn how to search for and interpret relevant information in order to make sound, well-founded decisions. In addition, participants will be able to independently conduct companion rescue in simple conditions.

Avalanche Safety 2 deepens decision-making skills for freeriding, route selection, and recognizing conditions. Participants will learn how to plan and carry out a safe trip, taking into account current conditions, terrain, and group dynamics. The course develops the ability to recognize avalanche terrain and to interpret weather and avalanche forecasts, including the impact of different avalanche problems. Participants will also learn to lead companion rescue situations effectively and call for help when needed. The course places emphasis on recognizing human factors and actively managing their effects both within the group and individually. Other risks related to backcountry skiing, such as hypothermia, are also covered, along with ways to prepare for them.

Prerequisites

Courses are held on natural snow and require physical effort. Participants must have basic skiing/riding skills in natural snow conditions and experience with equipment suitable for backcountry travel. Moderate fitness is an advantage, but ascents are done at a relaxed pace. If you are unsure about your skills or equipment, please consult us at info@lumiturvallisuuskeskus.fi.

Moving outside ski resorts always involves risks, but we choose the safest possible routes and travel as a guided group. We recommend checking your insurance coverage before the course (note: many policies do not cover off-piste skiing).
