Welcome!
Pyhä Avalanche Center produces the local avalanche forecast for the Pyhä region. We also educate FINLAV avalanche safety courses and freeride guiding within and around the Pyhä-Luosto National Park area. The operations are managed by Caa level 2 avalanche professionals, Tommi Laitervo, Petteri Nurminen, Jari Valvio, and Ville Väkeväinen.

Courses
We organize avalanche safety courses in accordance with the FINLAV – Finnish Avalanche Education System, for all interested freeriders and professionals who need avalanche safety expertise in their work.
The Avalanche Safety 1 course provides basic knowledge of avalanches and avalanche danger. Participants learn to manage the risk of being caught in an avalanche in mountains and hilly terrains using various methods. They learn how to find and interpret information to enhance their own safety. Participants can identify avalanche terrain and independently find a safe route in easy terrain. They also learn how to independently perform companion rescue in simple conditions and how to call for help.
The Avalanche Safety 2 course deepens decision-making, route selection, and condition assessment for freeriding. Participants learn to plan and carry out a safe trip, taking into account prevailing conditions, terrain, and group dynamics. The course also develops the ability to recognize avalanche terrain and interpret weather and avalanche forecasts, including the impact of different types of avalanche problems. Additionally, participants learn to lead companion rescue operations effectively and call for assistance when needed. The course emphasizes recognizing and actively managing human factors that influence safety, both within the group and individually. Other risks related to freeriding, such as hypothermia, are also addressed, along with strategies for preparation.
Pro 1 is intended for individuals who need avalanche expertise in their work. These professionals include guides, ski instructors, ski patrol members, and both permanent and volunteer rescue personnel.
The Rescue Course is designed for individuals involved in rescue operations who need basic knowledge of avalanches and related dangers. These groups include, for example, the Finnish Voluntary Rescue Service (Vapepa), rescue dog teams, and the Rescue Department
